Styx concert
Jan. 10th, 2005 07:49 pmThe Styx thing was better than I expected. I had thought that Dennis DeYoung was still with the band, but it turns out that only two of the five group members are names I remember: Tommy Shaw and James Young.
The guy they now have on keyboards and vocals (Lawrence Gowan) sounds enough like DeYoung that he can probably get on the phone with DeYoung's family and cadge money from them. Gowan's a bit too showy for my taste; his keyboard looked like it was built out of steel, so he could jump off the top of it and spin it around while he worked the crowd ...but perhaps I'm just jealous because he proved he could play "Maple Leaf Rag" faster than I was ever capable of doing myself back when I spent a lot of time on the piano :>
Even if the show was occasionally cheesy, I was taken on a pleasant stroll down memory lane, and being on the front row helped quite a bit. Rachal and I each ended up with a guitar pick, mine from Shaw and hers from JY ... I think she was a bit smitten with Mr. Young; he still has the rock'n'roll swagger working pretty well for him.
I also got to try out my new toy from Ecks-mas; the venue allowed flash cameras but not video cameras. Well, mine doesn't *look* like a video camera, anyway. The best five still shots can be found here:
