Made it by ...that much

I almost pissed away a couple of hundred dollars from a radio contest today.

Like this:

99 percent of the time, the station in question does its weekend cue-to-call at twenty minutes past the hour. I wasn't near a radio this afternoon, but had a hand free around then, and began wading through the forest of busy signals that start building up about quarter-after. When it got to nearly half-past the hour, I figured I was wasting my time -- but kept redialing, sort of on autopilot, intending to continue until my phone rang out and hung up on me, or I was told by a DJ that I was out of luck.

When someone finally picked up, I had the following conversation:

DJ: One-oh-six-one, hello!

Me: Have you given away your money, yet?

DJ: Nope!

Me: Okay; sorry to bother you. I'll keep listening...

DJ: Wait! Hold on ...are you still there?

Me: Yes?

DJ: I haven't given it away yet ...because you're caller twenty.

Me: That's much better news; I nearly hung up on you! Has that happened often?

DJ: Um, no. Most of my callers actually ask if they've won.

The contest provided two dollars for every degree Farenheit that appeared on their thermometer. Today, at 2:30pm, that was 101 degrees --> $202.00. I won't see the money for several weeks, I'm certain -- but that means it should be showing up just about in time to pay rent :>

I do love it when there's a polite misunderstanding of that nature :-).

If I'd actually hung up, the tragedy wouldn't have been the loss of the money, it would have been that I was unaware of the joke :>
