Should you ever find yourself spending the night on the floor at Denver's main airport, you can do worse than dossing in one of the wi-fi cubicles above the food court in Concourse B.
If you can arrange this without your spouse having a crisis caused by low blood sugar + bipolar wackiness following lack of sleep, leading you to lose track of each other for ninety minutes just before your flight's boarding time, so much the better. I have nothing but good feedback on the efficiency of the security officers at that airport, and wish circumstances had not required that I test their "missing person" system.
As for United Airlines, I can follow your logic that cancelled flights caused by weather delays don't leave you directly responsible for fully comping a hotel stay or meals... I don't like the logic, but I can follow it. However, it didn't reassure me to ask about the availablity of cots and be told chirpily, "Oh, we had a bunch of those during the last big storm a few months ago, but we got rid of them!" Really? You didn't think you'd ever have another weather crisis? In Denver? I'd like to see the minutes from the meeting where that decision was made (*shakes fist*).
I had some pleasant encounters with individual employees of United; having our bag-check fees waived was a nice touch. Having them waived as compensation for two flights being cancelled out of four total, unfortunately, smacked a litte of "we only amputated one leg, but at least we didn't decapitate you!" (We weren't flying anywhere near the northeastern states, and I'm aware that many of those passengers got rogered good and proper over the last week. But this is my little corner of the intarwebs, and I'll kvetch if I want to).
Other than our character-building experience on the trip home, I found my Ecks-mas vacation quite pleasant. I especially found the dinner at Melting Pot provided by our local patroness on our return very relaxing, and will be heading back to bed to catch up on sleep shortly.
