Duplex

We now have in our possession the keys to the duplex we'll be moving into over the next few weeks, courtesy of our friendly neighborhood patroness. It remains to be seen how much of our crap we'll actually sort through before the move is over, but now we'll at least have room for it in one place :>

And I've already mowed the lawn twice. These days, that grass grows faster than my beard.

To my not inconsiderable surprise, my design has reached the top-nine group in the voting at shirt.woot. The top three designs get printed, and paid for. There are lots of deserving layouts, many of which obviously had a lot more time spent on them than mine -- my best guess is that I'm getting the novelty vote, for putting an anaglyph 3-d graphic on a screenprinted shirt:

More so than my previous entries, to me this one actually feels finished: http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=52968

If any of you gentle readers wish to go vote for somebody at that site, feel free -- and again, you are under no obligation to vote for me just 'cause you know me. Some of the designs there really knock my socks off and will probably impress you as well :>

Friday was busy, but much better for me than for the graphic artist working at our client company.

At my mother-in-law's request, I've drawn a flying turtle. (Dunno where she got the idea).

I'm posting a link here not so much to beg for votes (there are other designs entered that I like quite a bit better than my own), but more to let you folks know what I'm up to: http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=52675

I think I'll start throwing my hat in over at shirt.woot -- I'm not particularly enamored of my first entry, but here 'tis, anyway: http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=52464

No, that's not the name of a band. Yet.

My father-in-law was taken to the emergency room, and has now had two surgeries on his gallbladder. He should be coming home Thursday, but we'll see. He's less uncomfortable than he was, and is no longer in danger -- but his acid reflux is now giving him fits. So rather than being in crisis-road-trip mode, we're, uh, on vacation in Seguin.

I like being able to work remotely on the laptop, and will be mowing my in-laws' yard in about six hours.

GPS voices

If custom voices are available for various GPS systems, would it be too much to ask for one from GLaDOS?

Gaiman

I ... think I must enter this contest:

http://neilgaiman.bookperk.com/engine/Rules.aspx?contestid=29933

If I appear in the cast of a professional audiobook recording, I promise not to forget y'all.

ETA: Entry complete. Here's the link to my narration stylings:

http://neilgaiman.bookperk.com/engine/Details.aspx?p=A&c=29933&s=7785298&i=1

I'd encourage you to go vote for -- well, somebody, if the idea amuses you, but not specifically for me unless you like mine best. I wouldn't want to be known as the guy who brought down the entire Gaiman media juggernaut with a sub-par performance on his audiobook :>

In addition, if you hadn't heard my voice before and were wondering ... yes, I usually sound like I have that much of a stick up my ass.

I discovered, at about 2pm local, that my deadline for the fabric design contest was three hours away rather than ten. Fortunately, Spoonflower appears to not penalize for uploading revisions to an existing design -- therefore, I sent in a marginally-acceptable placeholder layout, then filed off more rough edges and replaced it with this one:

http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/533195

It won't be purchasable until the test swatch arrives and I approve it -- I have the impression that Spoonflower may make their bread and butter from the purchase of test swatches, even though they're inexpensive.

For those of you keeping score, a character roster may be found under the cut:

I'm at the halfway point for my mythological critter design, and the deadline is next week. I managed to stretch my horizons, a little, and I think only three of the final twenty-six creatures will come from Greek mythology. Researching this project has been fun! Trying to find a level of detail that will read at the reproduction size has been ... less fun, but at least educational.

I'll link to the finished fabric here when I'm done, but if anyone wants to see a .PDF of the piece in progress, please leave me an e-mail address.

Rachal and I had a very pleasant weekend, after our friendly neighborhood patroness donated a hotel stay that it turned out her mother wouldn't be using. We got caught up on our sleep and reconnected ourselves.

We're very likely to be moving into a duplex with said patroness before six months have gone by, which will basically double our living space. It'll also provide Rachal with a double-oven of her very own, which she's looking forward to greatly.

Only bad news is my day job, which has been sucking wind. I'll keep my eyes out for additional paying projects, but want to keep working at home as often as I can arrange it. A 9-5 job which would have me out of the apartment all day, all week is ...not quite feasible.

I'm diving into a side project, and wanted feedback from my Gentle Readers.

I'll be designing a fabric pattern containing mythological creatures -- one for each letter of the English alphabet. I was too-heavily steeped in Greek mythology as a child, so now I intend to use a worldwide distribution of sources ...which brings me to my question: Any particular critters you'd like to see appear? I've settled on four letters already (C for Charybdis, I for Iktomi, P for Pixiu, and Q for Qilin) -- otherwise, while I have a pretty good-sized list to pick from, I thought I'd let you folks throw out your favorites.

I'll submit this layout to something that's basically a logo contest ("Project Selvage" at Spoonflower.com) -- and while I rarely touch those with a ten-meter cattle prod, this one is scratching an artistic itch, so even if it drums up zero customers, I'll be satisfied.

I don't wanna post an image here before the contest closes, but will e-mail graphic updates to whoever requests them.

Trade Show

I attended a trade show today at the behest of my boss.

It was quite worth going to; we acquired the names of more than one new vendor (and lots of loot), but no customers to my knowledge.

I kept forgetting that I was wearing a bar-coded name badge, so every time a perky booth person opened a conversation with, "May I scan you, Rick?", I had to bite my tongue against shrieking, "Get out of my mind!"

That is all :>

Filters?

I am thinking about setting up two filters for future posts, then throwing each post open after a month or so, just to avoid clogging up your immediate friends lists.

One filter would be for posts about radio contests, another for posts about Rachal's medical stuff.

If I set them up, I'll likely start keeping track of more trivial details than I have been, and if that thought gives you a rash, then please don't opt-in :>

Anyone interested in either filter?

(Gentle readers of the Radio filter will hear about why I was happy to give the wrong answer this morning in a weekend-plane-trip-for-two contest...)

For anyone reading this who regularly sells stuff online (and this may apply primarily to Cragslist sellers), how do you sort your customers? Lemme 'splain:

As I hoped, it appears that the "lifetime ban" was an error made when my data from last week's big prize was being entered. That's the good news. The somewhat-meh news is that when one wins the bigger prizes nowadays, the six-month timeout period applies not just to the station you won from, but to every station owned by that conglomerate.

This is either a new rule, or one that hasn't been applied to me previously, because I don't remember it kicking in after I won the Orlando trip the year before last.

But it means I didn't actually win Cirque du Soleil tickets over the weekend :<

At least I have nibbles on the Dane Cook and Gene Simmons prizes online, which should help with the abysmal paychecks I've been getting lately :>

I've recently tripped across a site at which I may set up a shop:

http://www.shapeways.com/

I've seen a couple of Green Lantern ring models available for sale, but I dunno if they are shipped already painted or not. I don't have a source to have green anodizing added later, but I expect it can be done somewhere.

Myself, I've got an idea about a gift for my mother (and also her aunt):

"Greetings:

I understand that at a Nampa Walgreens recently, one of your pharmacists refused to fill a Methergine prescription on ethical grounds. My mother lives in Nampa, and my wife has various health problems, so I'm more than a little curious: what are the odds of my wife being refused such a prescription when we visit my family in Idaho? I follow the rationale of allowing your employees to protect their religious beliefs, but I hope Walgreens' policy would suggest she forward the request to another pharmacist -- which apparently isn't what happened. If I have any of the details of this incident wrong, I apologize -- but I'd like to know what steps Walgreens is taking to make sure that it has all of its employees on the same page.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Regards,

[my name]
[my contact info]"

***** END PASTED text

No, that's not the exact Walgreens where I had the flat tire incident thirteen months ago. But nothing in Nampa is too far from anything else.
