Pretty good couple of weeks.
Rachal and I spent Ecks-mas at her folks' place. She stayed there a full week, while I toodled back to Dallas to flesh out my paycheck, then met my in-laws halfway the following Saturday to bring her home. Her former roomate and his girlfriend both came in from Tennessee to visit, having seen their own families fairly recently -- it was very nice to catch up with him and meet her.
Both the former roomate's girlfriend and Rachal had brought wheelchairs -- which they made intermittent use of all week, due to each of their issues with random pain. As the only common denominator, I ribbed the former roomate about this a good bit :>
Rachal's primary care physician thinks that a lot of her muscle aches have been caused by a cholesterol drug ...which she is now off of, with some success. And her recent fuzzy-headedness is theoretically due to overmedication... so we cut back on some of her meds with sedative effects -- also with success -- but I'm expecting fallout Real Soon Now in the form of additional migraines. At least she can walk around under her own power for short distances now, and put together a coherent sentence -- neither of which was the case two weeks ago.
Ecks-mas was very pleasant -- I married into a big family of excellent cooks, so we were stuffed to the gills by the time we left. I was especially impressed by the barbecued turkey my sister-in-law and her husband provided -- not covered in barbecue sauce, just heated in a cooker, which left the meat very moist and flavorful. On my side of the family, half of the reunion I was missing in Idaho didn't come off, as my great-aunt's flight from Florida got cancelled, and the alternative they tried to put her on would have only gotten her to my mother's house for a day or two. She decided to stay home instead, and wait to visit when Rachal and I next see Mom, sometime in early 2007.
(That'll also give me time to finish, uh ...illustrating the presents I intend to give out. Mom, I know you're probably not reading this -- sisters, let's all pretend I completed the drawings in 2006, hm?)
My in-laws have gotten firmly on board with the idea (which I agree with) that gift cards are the way to go with me and Rachal. Between what we received as presents, plus a couple of things I won from the radio, we're back to having a functioning DVD player ...plus I picked up some art supplies, plus we now have a router so that our Tivo can access the internet at the same time as our computer. Now if I can just find some software to reformat videos so that I can push them from the computer and watch them on the Tivo, rather than only going the other direction.
January first was spent back in Dallas -- low key, but we were both awake at midnight to see in the new year. And since Rachal's insurance actually *increased* the number of low-cost doctor visits they allow you to start off the year with, that'll give us more time to come up with the deductible, which I'm certain we'll be paying out before year's end. We may even succeed in not paying it out by month's end :>
A good time was pretty much had by all. There's some wackiness going on at work, what with one of our production people quitting, but I'll post more about that when the fallout finishes falling. In the meanwhile, I suppose it means additional job security.
