Fourteen years ago, Rachal and I got married in a pretty cool ceremony in south Texas. Today ...we're going to see an opthalmologist, then a pain doctor. And we may have lunch at Luby's, which has become a tradition of sorts ever since they served me a fresh juicy caterpillar with my broccoli a few anniversaries back.

In other news, we watched snippets of an episode of "Bible Man" last night, which leads me to offer a bit of unsolicited advice to Willie Aames:

Dude, when _Zapped!_ isn't the cheesiest piece on your résumé, it's time to reassess your choice of careers.

Things have been looking up for both Rachal and myself. I'm likin' my new work situation across the board, basically -- and she's not had any medical crises in several weeks. The doctors on her new insurance plan seem uniformly competent, and they actually listen to what she has to say, while making suggestions for new courses of treatment that she's not heard of before.

Like the anti-nausea drug she can't throw up: her new prescription for Promethazine has been made into a cream, which she rubs on the inside of her wrists. It seems to take effect within 10-15 minutes, which is faster than either pills or suppositories work on her -- plus her body has no way to, uh, eliminate it.

The only one of my co-workers who had heard of this delivery system was schooled in sports medicine -- it was even news to Rachal's primary care physician. So any of you folks with migraines, or other nausea issues, might wanna look into finding a compounding pharmacy in your neighborhood to whip up a batch.

How many times has someone on your friends list posted about something and you were really confused, but you didn't want to ask because you knew you should know? How many times have you felt "guilty" asking a close LJ friend a question that should be "obvious?"

Well, here's your chance.

If you've missed a few things, missed an entry or are just generally confused, ask me anything, even something extremely basic. I'm not allowed to get even slightly irritated at any of the questions; we've all missed things before.

(edit: I'm leaving this post public, and may choose to answer with a private e-mail rather than a post).

The former owner of my old store -- the one I've been freelancing for since I got fired -- told me last night that he'd like me to stick around and work for him a while. The only downside is, I'd be making less money than I would in the sugarplum daydreams I've been having since I started my job search. Upsides: I'd be making a smidgen more money than at my last job, this store's a bit closer to home, my slate of write-ups is obviously wiped clean -- and the big one: my once and future boss is well aware of my need for a flexible schedule. Since I won't be the only full-time artist at his store, I've been given permission to basically come and go as our family needs require. Bonus detail: by taking work as an independent contractor, I should be able to keep Rachal on the health insurance she has currently, which means we won't have to pay out a second deductible this year.

So as it happens, I was only unemployed for about six hours. *wipes sweat from brow*. This getting fired thing has turned into a fairly profitable experience :>

Things are going pretty well, by which I mean I'm not urping from stress. I'm actually kind of enjoying the whole job scene, but Rachal will be jittery until I find something permanent, I think.

The day I got fired, I landed at another store of the same name, doing freelance work for the former owner of my ex-company. His computer operator had a funeral to go to, so I'm working there at least 'til Tuesday, and maybe longer. (Since my once and current boss wants two computer operators at his new store, my occasional jaunts to doctors' offices wouldn't be the catastrophe they were at the store I was so recently working. Clear so far?) I'm delaying my unemployment claim with each day worked, but also padding the time I can keep searching, so it's all coming out in the wash.

Plus I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a temp assignment to come through that would handily pad our bank account. I should learn more Monday: it'd last several weeks, for fifty-plus hours a week ... at twenty-three dollars per hour. If the hypothetically permanent offer at the sign shop I've been at can wait for that long, I'd prefer to stack those jobs in order ... which would make getting fired an ultimately profitable enterprise.

More later.

When I got to work this morning, my boss called me aside, and after we talked for half an hour he regretfully gave me an invitation to the world.

No hard feelings on either side, I think -- basically, the short deadlines inherent in his shop conflicted with the medical trips I often must make with Rachal ... so he needs to find someone more dependable.

This frees up my time to find a job with more flexible scheduling, since he's giving me a week of severance pay on top of the vacation pay I'm legally due. If any of you folks hear of any graphic design jobs in the D/FW area, or any freelance art that needs doin', feel free to drop me a line. (I'd also be interested in any leads down towards San Antonio/Austin; Rachal's folks are nearby and have offered to put us up).

My online portfolio is available here:

I'll post updates as they occur, but don't feel sorry for me yet. This could turn out to be a very useful development.

Any of you folks local to Dallas are invited to see an art show by Katie Gardner, who works with me at a sign shop to be named later.

The show's being held here:

...and you can preview some of her other work online:

First story:

I have yet another reason for liking the new boss.

It's a bad month to be a Salsbury. Mom just called to let me know that my father's brother Tom had a major heart attack, and died after being taken to the hospital.

My mother has been dealing with Dad's death very well, by which I mean I've not seen her collapse with grief. I'm not sure what is the most healthy path for her to take, and I know she'd had several months (since the start of my father's treatment for throat cancer) to process his possible demise ...but still, she's been a rock and I'm pretty sure there's a crash somewhere on her horizon. Mebbe after all the guests leave town, and she looks around her empty house -- at least she has a good support system in Idaho, I think, and a lot of old friends to lean on.

Got back on Tuesday from my father's memorial service. It's been about two weeks since I was told he was going back in the hospital with lung cancer and a staph infection; he'd been in recovery from his (nominally) successful throat cancer treatments.

I'll post this in three parts, so you may pick and choose what you wanna read. If you have issues with cancer, death, or hospitals, skip this post. I'm serious.

I intend to write two more sections: one with other details about my father's final week, then a separate Plaque post. This first one is the only one that should have any triggering/yucky details, so consider yourselves warned.

Rachal and I are trying to figure out the most fiscally useful way to keep her insured.

We've been reminded that state universities offer health coverage of sorts to their students, and will be calling around comparing their cost/coverage ratios to the state risk pool insurance that's really her only other option.

My question is, for any Texas folks with information -- what's to keep, well, anybody from paying a couple of hundred bucks a semester to take one class while reaping the rewards of the health care program? Seems there's got to be a catch, and someone may have done some of the research ahead of me.

If not, and if there's any interest expressed by my readership, I'll post what I find here.

My father's gone; my sister just called from the hospital forty-five minutes ago. More later.
rickvs: (Sad)
My dad's taken a bad turn. The cancer that they successfully burned out of this throat has apparently taken up residence in his lungs, along with pneumonia and a staph infection. He's left instructions that he's not to be resuscitated, and I dunno if he's strong enough to go home for hospice care.

When I thought (six hours ago) that he was likely to recover, I planned to mosey out to Idaho in a few weeks, to spell my mother again during his ongoing treatment. But I got another phone call telling me basically that if I wanted a chance to see him again, I better hurry out there ...so Rachal and I are leaving tomorrow, with tentative plans to return a week from Monday.

More as the situation develops, but my next post will probably be a Plaque.

Anyone know of any health insurance companies (either local to Texas or nationwide) who might be willing to start up a new policyholder with myriad health problems? (Diabetes, bipolar disorder, migraines...)

My experience so far has been not that most companies say, "Certainly we'll insure you ....with astronomical premiums", but instead, "We won't take on such a policy at any price."

If someone could prove me wrong, I'd be most grateful.

I'm gonna start wading through my old newsgroup posts (mainly from alt.callahans), and I'll republish here any of them I find interesting. I'll eventually re-date them correctly in LiveJournal, with a disclaimer about their true origins. And yeah, I've got a reason for pulling this Nine-Eleven post specifically, which I'll noodle about at the bottom.

After years of describing myself as looking like the third Blues Brother, I've finally figured out which actor I most resemble.

Except for the nose, I seem to be the spitting image of Alexei Sayle.

Dammit :>

Anyone else think they favor one particular celebrity or another?

I *can't* be the first one to come up with this idea, but I haven't seen it elsewhere:

In a fit of foolishness and hubris, I find I have little bits of time on my hands, and am willing to whomp up some LJ icons for them as wants them. I may not get to your request anytime soon, if ever, but please reply here if there's always been some idea you wanted to appear on your posts, but lacked the graphic resources to produce.

Does anyone else reading this come up with funny quips while they dream -- not just ones that make no sense upon waking up, but humor that can actually withstand the light of day?
