Field trips from the new boss
Oct. 8th, 2005 01:33 pmMore good stuff from New Owner. Our store had a profitable month, and he'd told us a while back that he had something planned for Friday, Oct. 7th, but wouldn't tell us what it was.

Saw the stage musical "Wicked" last night, and I liked it better than Rachal did. Spoilers follow.

I seem to recall a few of the local folks were talking about going to see the musical, "Wicked". I've come into possession of some tickets (which aren't for sale) for the show on Thursday, October 6th. Dunno if Rachal and I will have time for dinner beforehand, but if anyone else happens to be going to that date, perhaps we can squee at each other outside the venue :>
More new owner goodness
Sep. 11th, 2005 06:21 amFriday was the 90-day anniversary at our store for both New Owner and his partner. I was unaware of it, but my immediate supervisor, J__, bought him a card and a few other cute toys, and we had a pleasant ceremony of sorts as part of our morning meeting. (On the card I wrote, "You unfortunate saps; it's too late to go back now! -- Rick").

I was chatting online with a former boss of mine when he asked:
"Do you know anybody that can code (quickly) a simple form in PHP and link it to an equally simple mySQL database?"
I told him I didn't, but I'd put the word out. I think he's trying to turn this job around this weekend, so if you fit the bill and want me to put you in touch with him, please reply here.
Thanks!

More liking of the new boss.
Aug. 27th, 2005 08:22 amDunno if he can quite afford it, but New Owner did something that I think got him quite a few brownie points with the employees.

Dad's throat, and sister news.
Jul. 31st, 2005 06:06 pmTalked (briefly) to my father about his throat problems. Turns out the doctors didn't remove everything they wanted to, and what they tested was malignant. So he finds out Tuesday whether he'll be having chemo and/or radiation therapy.

Dad's throat, and religious discussion
Jul. 21st, 2005 11:51 pmMy father's had a sore throat for several months, and they just did surgery to remove one of his tonsils and its attendant growth. Tests on the growth will arrive in a week or two, but for the moment potato soup seems to be the only thing he can swallow.
In other news, I finally got something cleared up that I've been carrying around for nigh on seventeen years. I'd been under the distinct impression that my parents blamed my wife for my agnosticism, because I didn't put up any red flags to them about it around age eleven, when I was losing my faith. We had the "I'm not Christian" discussion the same night we had the "I'm engaged, dammit" fight in the middle of a TGI Friday's in 1990. So tonight, my mother tells me they've never been much concerned about *when* I lost my faith, just quite concerned that I lost it at all.
And I've been holding their occasional animosity towards Rachal against them for too long, and for the wrong reasons.
Glad Mom and I finally had that talk; it was more than overdue.

Artistic integrity. Or something.
Jun. 11th, 2005 10:39 pmA couple of weeks ago, I watched the DVD of Ralph Bakshi's _Wizards_, while listening to his commentary track. Several funny anecdotes were told, and lots of good rallying cries about how as an artist, he just wanted to make his films without corporate interference.

Rick and Rachal in stocking caps
May. 15th, 2005 06:34 pmHere's a cute picture you might like, from Rachal's recent trip to the epilepsy evaluation ward. (Turns out she doesn't have epilepsy, but at least we got the photo).

Right answer, wrong motivation
May. 13th, 2005 05:25 amWe have two bank accounts with B of A. I dropped Rachal's paycheck off after writing our Dallas account number on the back ...and the teller apparently looked up her name and deposited it straight into our Nashville account, instead.
Which caused us to get dinged for overdrafts, to the tune of ninety dollars.
So I called them to straighten it out, and after being left on hold while the phone lady looked into it, she came back with the following:
"Since you've been such a good customer with us for so long, we can go ahead and refund those charges to your account. Have a nice day!"
I thanked her and hung up, then realized how much her response bugged me -- it was as if she'd said, "Well, since you're a white guy, we can fix your problem."
What should my history as a customer have to do with the likelihood that they'll correct their own error? Maybe she was just trying to pay me a compliment as she signed off, but dayummm....

Jobs and gift certificates
Apr. 14th, 2005 08:14 pmRachal got fired from one of her two jobs. Brookhaven college decided that for the students' sake, they needed to provide the consistency of a single instructor for the rest of the semester, rather than a series of substitutes. (If you're on my medical filter, you know why she's been missing work). While not unexpected, this is disappointing, and kinda leads me to my next question:
Anyone want to buy a hundred dollar gift certificate to, so help me, http://www.pamelaanderson.com/ ? I won it as part of a prize pack, by phoning a radio station before I quite realized what they were giving away. I think I'll actually keep and read the book she, uh, wrote, but the gift certificate is available at a discount to be named later. If I have no takers, I may convert it to cash by buying her DVDs and running them over to the used media store.

Natural Bridge Caverns
Mar. 13th, 2005 07:59 pmRachal and I are at her folks' place in Seguin. She doesn't have to teach at either campus this week since both of her spring breaks line up, and I don't have to be back to work till Thursday. Friday, her sister gets married in Houston, and I'll go pick Rachal up from her folks next weekend.
Today we went to the Natural Bridge Caverns near San Antonio, so named because of the one stone arch remaining from the ceiling of a large underground room. It collapsed some five thousand years ago, to the great inconvenience of the bats who roosted there, but there were plenty more nice limestone formations left for us sightseers to gawk at :>
What made this more interesting than other cave trips I've taken is that the area's had a lot of rain these last few weeks, and the lowest rooms were flooded. There was a constant patter of water drops while we toured, which was kinda cool as long as you didn't dwell on the implications while puttering around two hundred feet underground. I'll post photos later, after I get home and have time to tinker with them in Photoshop.

Ganked from a bunch of different people. Ask me if you want any details, although I know I've posted about a couple of these before:
1) Ordered a pizza to be delivered six hundred miles away.
2) Visited a nude beach. With my parents and fiance.
3) Won three different radio contests in twenty four hours.
4) Sawed a hole in my hand while attempting to bisect a dinner roll.
5) Marched in the Rose Parade. Twice.
6) Attended college classes wearing a towel, slippers and shower cap.
7) Had more than one hundred stitches put in my head, all above eye level.
8) Put ear drops in my eye.
9) Performed in a Super Bowl halftime show.
10) Had items with my artwork on them sold in Wal*Mart.

1. I will tell you what song reminds me of you.
2. I will tell you what celebrity/public/fictional person you remind me of.
3. I will give you one word that I associate with you when I think of you.
4. I will tell you what color(s) I associate with you.
Then steal this for your journal and make someone else's day as well.

Styx concert
Jan. 10th, 2005 07:49 pmThe Styx thing was better than I expected. I had thought that Dennis DeYoung was still with the band, but it turns out that only two of the five group members are names I remember: Tommy Shaw and James Young.
The guy they now have on keyboards and vocals (Lawrence Gowan) sounds enough like DeYoung that he can probably get on the phone with DeYoung's family and cadge money from them. Gowan's a bit too showy for my taste; his keyboard looked like it was built out of steel, so he could jump off the top of it and spin it around while he worked the crowd ...but perhaps I'm just jealous because he proved he could play "Maple Leaf Rag" faster than I was ever capable of doing myself back when I spent a lot of time on the piano :>
Even if the show was occasionally cheesy, I was taken on a pleasant stroll down memory lane, and being on the front row helped quite a bit. Rachal and I each ended up with a guitar pick, mine from Shaw and hers from JY ... I think she was a bit smitten with Mr. Young; he still has the rock'n'roll swagger working pretty well for him.
I also got to try out my new toy from Ecks-mas; the venue allowed flash cameras but not video cameras. Well, mine doesn't *look* like a video camera, anyway. The best five still shots can be found here:
